The word trinity is not found in the Bible. It was made up by the Christians to try express the Godhead (the three distinct persons of God being one). Trinity can be broken down into two words “Tri” and “Unity”. This is to tell us that God is three (“Tri”) and one at the same time ("unity"). Click here for the supporting scripture.
Let's describe each member of the Trinity to understand them a bit better. After this, I will attempt to answer the question above. Please note that just because I say one person of the trinity is a certain way, I am not trying to imply that the others are not that way. For example, if I were to say The Hunger Games movie has better action than the Transformers movie, I am not saying that the Transformers action scenes suck. The Transformers movie indeed has good action scenes but all I am saying is comparing the two movies The Hunger Games action scene is better. So if I say Jesus is loving, for example, I am not saying that the Father isn't. I am saying that the character that appeals to us more as being loving in the Godhead is Jesus.
He is the one the created the heavens and the earth. All the beauty you see around you like a sunset over mountains, the majestic sounds and sight of waterfalls, the lady you saw walking past you that knocked the air out of your lungs, the way she was so beautiful. The Capetonian in me wants to refer to Jammie stairs at UCT in the evening. So the Father is a perfectionist. He loves doing things right and He always has a reason why things happen.
The Bible describes Him to be HUGE! The Bible says he holds the all the waters of the earth in the palm of his hands. That he breathes stars(Psalm 33:6). Let me put that into perspective.
You could fit 1.3 million earths in the Sun. The biggest star that we have discovered (meaning there could be bigger than stars out there) is called VY Canis Majoris. This star is 1200 times bigger than the sun. You could fit 1.5 billion earths in Canis Majoris! The Bible says that He breathes stars. That must be a gigantic God.
I don’t mean to over emphasize (okay maybe just a little :-))but if God created everything then that means he created infinity. If he is bigger than everything, that means he is bigger than infinity. Our mind cannot even imagine anything that big.
A few other things:
First and foremost Jesus was 100% man and 100% God. The Bible says:
The Bible describes Jesus as the Word. Not God, not the Holy Spirit. He is different in this way. The Bible says "He was with God" and that "He was God" affirming that Jesus is distinct from the rest of the Godhead but He is God like the rest of the Godhead.
The Bible says that Jesus is THE way, THE truth and THE life. and that nobody goes to the Father but through Him(John 14:6). I could write an entire book on the depth of this statement but I just put it in to show that the Bible doesn't describe the Father as the way, or the Holy Spirit as the way. Jesus is different from the rest of the Godhead. It is only by Him that one can be saved. NOT by the Father and NOT by the Holy Spirit. It is by Jesus that we are saved.
A few other things:
Spirit of God
The Spirit of God is not an it. The Holy Spirit is a person with feelings like us. He was with God when the earth was created (Genesis 1: 1-2) and He is the figure of the Godhead that is known for His power.
The Spirits function
As you can see, three persons of the Godhead are different persons. They have similarities and they have certain unique attributes individually. It is time to understand how they can be one.
How it make sense?
Often many would say the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are different parts of God. Like how your leg serves part of your body as a whole, the Father is part of God. This is not true. The Bible makes it clear that the Father in isolation is God. Jesus in isolation is God and the Holy Spirit in isolation is God. You cannot say your leg in isolation is you. I think "time" is a better example of how the Godhead can be different but one person.
Time is divided into three parts. The past, the present and the future. The past is vastly different from the future, the future is different from the present and the present is different form the past. However, when I talk about the past, everyone knows I am referring to time. In isolation, the past is time! The present also is time! Although the two are different! In the same way, the members of the Godhead are different yet they are the same!
Here's a cool explanation about the Trinity using dimensions
Here's my favourite Philosopher trying to explain it also.
An interesting question Ravi asks is if we are to say God is loving, then before creation, who did God love? If God was only one then love would not exist because there would be no one to love. But with the Trinitarian God, the Father could love the Son, the Son could love the Holy Spirit and in vice versa. If God is a God of relationship then before creation, who would he have been in relationship with? All these statements make sense with the Biblical Trinitarian God!
I actually preached on this. Here is the sermon:
